雅叙園内の全龍福先生のすばらしい螺鈿細工や漆の作品を生で鑑賞し、先生の貴重なお話を聞くことができるイベントです。ランチタイムもありますので、ヨン友さんとの交流会も兼ねて楽しいひと時を過ごしましょう～♪

Words of recommendation by Japanese writer/buddhist nun Jakucho Setouchi (formerly known as Harumi Setouchi):

When I started reading this book, I could not put it down. It was captivating, like reading a mystery. Although its a simple memoir, the book was charged with the highest sense of tension.

Jeon-san is man who totally restored the lacquered walls and ceilings of the Meguro Gajoen in Tokyo which was in a badly ruined state. He reproduced the Gajoen as a paradise on earth, sparkling with Japanese lacqure, mother of pearl work and gold leaf.

Upon visiting the Gajoen, I was absolutely stunned by its splendor. I thought to myself, perhaps Jeon-san is a fierce God in the shape of a man. Japan has probably grown learning ever so much from the culture of Korea. Even today, Japan is being taught from Korea the various techniques of culture, the passion in preserving it, as well as the pride of loving one's own country.

She could easily understand why BYJ fell for Jeon sonsen-nim.

She also felt that it had a lot of similarities with the drama, "First Love".

BYJ's mentor on Japanese lacquer Jeon Yongbok sonsen-nim will be giving a lecture at Gajoen! This is the second of two lectures (the first to be given in Kyoto at the end of May) produced by wuri kajok Pinky Ring.

When I met you on the plane, I was so nervous that I was sweating profusely. Do you remember how I looked?
BYJ: Buta no shabu-shabu. (Pork shabu-shabu.)
S: Ooh, your Japanese has improved a lot.
BYJ: Gohan tabemashitaka? ( Have you eaten?)
S: Oh, yes. You know, I think I ate too much for lunch today.

S: Oh, you made a tiny mistake (with your grammar).
In this case, you should have said “kokowa” instead of “kokoga”.
BYJ: Nazedaro? (I wonder why…)
S: Well, I can’t answer that. You shouldn’t think too much when you want to learn a language. Repetition is the key. You want to try it?
BYJ: Suki desu. (I like you.)

I hear that with the falling stock prices, you’ve taken quite a blow. Were you alright?
BYJ: Sugoku itakatta desu. (It hurt me a lot.)
S: I can imagine. But for us, with the weak won, everything seems very cheap when we travel to Korea. Fruit must be cheap too, right?
BYJ: Ichigo ichie(n) (A strawberry is one yen- a pun on “ichigo ichie”, BYJ’s favorite proverb meaning “treasure every encounter for it will never recur”.)
S: Oh, now that’s cheap! By the way, do you remember that I lent you some money the last time we met? Because I was nervous, I had the bill clasped in my hand so tight that it got warm. Do you remember how much it was?
BYJ: Atatakai go seien. (He is actually saying "warm support "A pun on “atatakai go sen en” meaning, warm 5000 yen.)
S: When will you give it back to me?
BYJ: Chotto matte kudasai. ( Please wait while.)
S: Are things that bad? Are you okay?
When, Yong Joon? How long would I have to wait?

(Satvik alias satovic went to Busan to pay a visit to Lee Soo Hyun's grave to report to him how many of BYJ's family supported the foundation under his name. She also wanted him to know that though she has made the decision to close B.S.J. as of Feb 14, the donation project has been passed on to another chingu.)

Korean graves are usually large shaped earthen mounds.
When you go out to the suburbs, you can see graves every where on the fields, and people are told not to enter the woods with graves in the evenings as it is believed that demons will appear. Due to limitations of land, cremation is becoming more popular, but even so, the remains of the tradition still exists of adding a earthen mound to a grave (in this manner).

In Korea, a visit to a grave requires the following things: flowers, incense, alcohol, and a
special bow called 'kun jol' (큰절). 'Kun jol' means a deep bow, and true to the word, you use your whole body to show respect. Now I was confident that I could carry this kun jol out well! Because .... I had countlessly watched BYJ practice this particular bow!

This bow requires of you to practically scrape your head to the ground, and pay the highest respect to your ancestors and seniors. This is not merely a cremony - I think it is very important for us to bow our heads like this and use our enter body to express our reverence. When Muslims pray, when Hindus pray for Samadhi, and Buddhists throw down their body to the ground, they all use their whole body to prostrate themselves. I believe it is an opportunity for every man regardless of the amount of power he possesses to learn humility, bowing his head in front of god.

When my Ayurveda teacher was providing counselling to a patient with psychological problems, he advised him to go pray at any place of his choice where god is worshipped (e.g. a shrine, temple, church) . Also, he told him to bow his head to his parents everytime he leaves the house, notifying them that he will be going out. For this person, it was necessary for him to learn humility in this way.

Similar to the definition given by the WHO, Ayurveda gives us the knowledge for living a healthy life not only physically, but mentally and socially as well. At the same time, I think learning reverence through bowing in such rituals is wonderful for the soul, mind and developing a wise means of communication. In Korea, children are not given their New Years allowance unless they perform this kun jol well

SO.... going back to my story... I had truly believed that I had performed this bow quite well thanks to BYJ! But... actually, I had made a big boo-boo! The steps were completely different between a man and a woman! Oh NO~~~!

Women are supposed to stand up, put her hands together around the level of one's eyes, go straight down smoothly and sit, and with the hands in the same position slightly raised in the air, bow gracefully. For weddings, this bow must be repeated in front of of the parents and relatives many times. It requires quite a bit of strength in the legs and hips. Oh well, I guess I'm not cut out to become a Korean bride...

Satovic's Valentine's Letter to BYJ

The Last Valentine’s Gift from B.S.J.



Dear Yong Joon-san,

This will be the last Valentine’s Day gift to you from the Japanese fan site B.S.J. (BYJ Supporters in Japan.)

In August 2004, we got together with an idea: instead of buying small gifts individually for your birthday, we consolidated that money to donate it to the L.S.H. Asia Scholarship founded by the parents of a courageous Korean student called Lee Soo Hyun who jumped into the railway tracks trying to save a man’s life. We wanted to make a bouquet out of the joy the Asian students were to experience from being able to study on a scholarship, and give it to you as a birthday gift.

Since then, we have been continuing this project every year, donating the money which otherwise would have been used to buy birthday presents and Valentine’s chocolates to the scholarship, and this will be our 10th time to make a donation. On this Valentine’s Day, we collected 760,475 yen from 235 fans, and the total amount which were donated in the ten times we carried out this project came to 16,353,441 yen from over 6000 fans in total. The money was granted to over 100 students from Asia including Korea, and helped them realize their dreams.

Also in 2005, we held art exhibits with the works of family members who actualized their artistic talents by being inspired by you, and families in five cities of Japan managed these events raising over 5 million yen for the victims of the Asian Tsunami and the Mid Niigata Earthquake.

The total amount of the donations during the past four and a half years comes to as much as 21,360,324 yen. We are all ordinary housewives and office workers, and the donations were not made by any particularly wealthy member in large amounts. When I think about how we were able to accomplish this, what came to my mind was the story in the Bible of the five loaves of bread and two fish.

One day, five thousand people gathered to listen to the teachings of Jesus. Though he did not have the money to buy bread to feed the crowd, a boy offered him five loaves of bread and two fish. When Jesus split the food and distributed it, he was able to satisfy the stomachs of five thousand people, and there were still scraps of bread left to fill twelve baskets. I’m sure you learned this story in Sunday school too.

There are some people who say that this story does not imply that God had multiplied the bread and fish as if by magic. They claim that seeing the boy had offered all the food he had, the others also took out what they had in their pockets and bags and shared them, and that was how everyone was able to eat to their heart’s content.

We are like the people in this story. It was you Yong Joon-ssi, who first offered us the bread and fish. Because you called us fans family and respected us, and offered us love, it made us happy. Because you entertained us always trying to look your best, we wanted to make you happy in return, and to share this wonderful joy with others. And when each us pitched in a little bit of what we had in our pockets, it led to this incredible result.

Since we wanted to know more about your country, we also held cultural events such as classes in traditional Korean tea and Hangeul. We learned to make great kimchi too!

Before your drama “Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi” was released, we reserved a planetarium just for ourselves holding a screening to learn about the history of Goguryeo. We also held an event called “Yong Yong Academic Conference” where we along with a famous professor analyzed your personal charms and the wonderful features of “Winter Love Song”, all with great sense of humor. With these various events and activities on the board of our site, the members made many friends. We never dreamed that we would be able to get to know people who we could call “my best friends” at our age. We owe this to you and thank you for it.

You probably never thought that you would stimulate such a reaction just by appearing in a “Winter Love Song”. But it seems that this is your fate. It may be a burden for you but still, it seems this is your fate. We have been captivated by your very existence – your beauty, strength, fighting instinct, tenacity, stubbornness, and were given new ways of enjoying life and the power to live.

Thank you very much.

The other day, 750 members from all over Japan gathered for a great graduation event, and had a wonderful time that was full of laughter. Since we really hope you would look at the films which summarizes your activities of the past five years in Japan, I will inform you of the “Gallery” where you can watch them.

No matter how you may change by growing old, even if you may go bald, grow fat, make mistakes, as long as you are the actor Bae Yong Joon who continues to live life to its fullest, we will always support you. Kim Tei-ssi announced "Yong Joon-san has a present for you!" and explained an exciting event that among the 10,000 in the venue, 3 lucky persons whose seat number is chosen by a lottery will get an autograph from YJ - he will hear the person's name on the spot, and sign the pamphlet of the Christmas event in front of their eyes. Oh, this is great! What a wonderful idea! This makes us feel that even though YJ is far away from us, he is actually participating in this event, don't you think? It would be so nice if he we could have him participate in the B.S.J. final event next February - even just for the lottery^^


Kim Tei-san then called out to the studio in Seoul.

There was a white box in front of YJ which was divided into 3 sections.

In the first section, there were cards indicating "seats in center section", "arena seats" and "stand" respectively. In the next section there were cards indicating the row numbers such as "Block D Row 29". And the last section contained cards with the seat numbers.

The seats on my right and left were empty. If and when the seat on my right side is called, I will stick my butt in it immediately! The same goes with the one on my left. First one there wins! Yeah! I went into combat mode, lifting my body slightly from my seat.

BUT! There was another problem. Although the big screen in the front and the monitor hanging from the center of the dome had been showing the studio in Seoul, the latter changed to show the happenings of the venue, and we were only able to see Yong Joon in the monitor in the front. Well, that is OK from the viewpoint of showing the winner's expression, but the problem was, in order to build up the excitement, aiming for a drum roll effect, they started to swirl the spotlights all around the venue, making it hard to see YJ's face. That was somewhat disappointing. Nothing to whine about, but if it weren't for that small fault, the lighting plan was perfect! And because the sound, images, MC and songs were all so wonderful, it was too bad that they had to make that mistake.

Even though it was hard, I tried desperately to see him and concentrated on the big screen far away, and in the meantime, the first card was drawn - "center". Kim Tei-san said "please show us the card!" and replying "Ne (yes)", YJ showed the card towards the camera. He looked like a kid, and so cute~! I know it's rather rude to be calling a 36 year old man "cute", but can I help it? Cute he is!

The person who had her seat number called jumped up, but for some reason the person in back of her jumped up with her and got into the camera, so we weren't able to tell who the winner was. OK, I know you're excited, but you're making things awfully confusing! After the winner gave out her name, YJ immediately wrote it on the pamphlet, and not giving the winner time to sink into her happiness, he immediately started to shake the box getting ready to draw the next card. Because there was not enough time, YJ was carrying out his job briskly, and the way he was going about it was funny that laughter filled the venue. I wonder if he wrote her name Hangeul. Alphabet? It couldn't have been hiragana (Japanese)?

When he drew the second number, it was from the arena, but to our surprise, the seat was not occupied. YJ confirmed with the director in front of him, "one more time? I should draw one more time, right?" and shaking the box again, he drew another card. It was so funny seeing him going through this in a brisk manner that I wondered why he gave this impression, and it occurred to me that we have never had the chance to see him act in haste. It's not like he is panicking, but it was quite funny seeing him taking on the task so single-mindedly. YJ who is usually so elegant was drawing the cards hurriedly, shaking the box up and down in haste, and waiting to sign the next name in earnest. And without as much as an interval, he goes onto the next one. With the help of Ryu Seung-Su-san, the final person was decided.

A simple task like drawing a lot and signing his autograph is beautiful, elegant, slightly funny, sophisticated and cool... I never thought that being able to see Yong Joon no-cut in real time action would be so fun and make me so happy!! What a charming guy! I feel bad to be saying this about an actor, but the natural Yong Joon is so wonderful. People who go to see him at the location sites regardless of the notices on the official sites asking them not to, probably can't help going in hope of seeing this natural YJ.

In the interview, YJ himself claimed that he is always able to work hard because his family is always at the location sites from early morning, rain or shine. If what he says is true, what is the meaning of the notices on the sites pleading us not to go? Next time, maybe I should go too! If he would do a live broadcast like this at least once every six months, I could perhaps hold back~ (I'm trying to threaten BOF^^)

So, after the autograph session for the 3 lucky ladies out of the family of 10,000 was over, it was finally time for YJ's last speech.

"I didn't think it would be over so quickly." Hey, you're the one that went through the lottery so hurriedly! Many fans probably shared my reaction.
After giving his heartfelt thanks not only to the family, but to the staff of the concert and event, he said, please have a merry Christmas with your family, and added his usual greeting, kongan hashigo, henbok haseyo. And after handing the mike to Seung Su-san, he put his arms around his shoulder.

While thinking, oh that lucky guy, Seung Su-san said jokingly after grabbing YJ's arm that was placed on his shoulder "everyone, you must envy me for this okkedonm (friends so close that they have their arms around each other - this phrase might be familiar to you from YJ's MV). But you see, though YJ is here, he actually has his arm around all of you~." How nice^^ When SS-san had the mike, he ended up doing most of the talking and YJ was just sitting by his side enjoying himself, but it just made me happy to see him relaxed like that. When YJ was talking, SS-san handed him a Santa doll, and they fooled around. SS-san said that he would try to visit Japan soon, but it would be nice if the two of them would come together next time, and give an enjoyable interview. Perhaps they would be here on promotion for the "Winter Sonata Animation" project.

In the end, he always thanked Kim Tei-san and also congratulated her on the arrival of her baby adding "you are beautiful as always". Wow, he's like an Italian I thought, but after they ended the broadcast Kim Tei-san hastily tried to explain "he didn't say pretty, but he meant you are looking well in spite of giving birth to a child". Of course she didn't want to have an audience of 10,000 turn against her! She was desperate! Kim Tei-san - she REALLY knows how we family feel^^v

So, the broadcast from Seoul ended. but because the audio line was still alive, Kim Tei-san favored us with a nice arrangement. OOOHHH, he's still connected~~~! The people who were only watching the lyrics on the central screen may not have noticed it until later, but because I was familiar with the song from singing it every year at church and I could sing it without looking at the lyrics, I was able to notice him immediately. I was never so grateful that I was a Christian as in that moment - just joking^^ YJ noticing that he was shown on the monitor, pointed to it with the expression of "ah!" Next, Kim Tei-ssi said "everyone, please take out your handkerchiefs for the next song."

While I was thinking , ah, so it must be Winter Love Song, Ryu's song, the audience let out a light burst of laughter as if to say "oh, you aren't expecting to cry with WLS after all these years, are you?!" But Kim Tei-ssi insisted "when I say this, many of you tend to react like who needs hankies in this day and age, but when you actually watch the scenes from the drama, it brings back the memories and people start to groping for their handkerchiefs after all!". I let down my guard because I heard Ryu sing right in front of me at the pachinko event, but nothing had happened. So, what could happen today?

The Christmas tree on stage split in the middle, and Ryu appeared from there with his face looking down. I was having funny thoughts like "oh he sure looks like Sohn-san ... if he looked up and it WAS Sohn-san, it'd be such a blast!"

On screen, Yujin and Chun Sahng are making a snowman and kissing.

Oh WLS .... how I loved it... there was a time when I was scared that I would never get over the addiction of watching and crying over it day and night ....

The people around me were moving there mouths with Ryu, and singing softly.

But after running these scenes as commercials on TV for the pachinko, making them seem worn out, I thought I won't be able to cry any more... but like with the "Hotelier" section, the staff had arranged the scenes in a clever way so that one was able to go back to the days we were in love with the drama.

What I thought was really great was the scenes they chose were not the ones like when Chun Sahng gets in an accident and Yujin is shown in a white out, or scenes featuring Chun Sahng and Min Hyung, but wonderful scenes which bring back the words spoken by the characters, mostly by Yujin (although the film is silent).

Stringing together scenes of Chun Sahng and Min Yeong looking all handsome and cool is a job that can even be done by someone who hardly knows the drama, but WE are PROS when it comes to WLS! A cheap trick like that will never work on US! When we hear lines from the drama that touch our hearts (well, since we are usually identifying ourselves with the heroine, it would usually be the ones where Yujin lets out her feelings or Yujin's emotions are swaying by MH) , then it would get to us. BUT hey, I didn't cry~! Kim Tei vs satovic - round one is mine!

Ryu-san is fluent in Japanese, so he goes on with the show on his own without the help of a MC. He said "excuse me for a second..." and went to the back of the Christmas tree and came back with a white cloth in his hand. Then, he sang a song called "Param" for us - it was based on his experience of appearing in a TV program in which he stayed in the countryside of Japan, and and experiencing the way of living where the time flows slowly. I believe the Korean "Param" means wind. I learned this word because Min Hyung's haircut was called "param mori". But Ryu explained that param has another meaning ,"wish" and he sang the song using the white cloth in a choreography that resembled a traditional dance of Korea. Although the first two singers who appeared were quite good, Ryu 's song seemed to contain something the two young artists did not possess, a sort of message he wanted to convey. Even though I was not able to understand the lyrics, it was moving.

Kim Tei-ssi came back on stage, and the two of them talked for awhile. Finally, he sang "My Memory" and on the screen, they of course included the scene where MH gestures "split the snowball ! Split it!". But the climax of the song coincides with Yujin's "I will not say I'm sorry. Because you took what is most important for me with you. Because you took my heart with you. " The greatest of lines fell right in place with the ending of the song~~~~! Oh, you got me!Even if this was a coincidence, you really got me! Aigoo~ who would of thought! Kim Tei-ssi, this one is yours^^
